Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has every thought of taking a tub of a Sports racer(similiar to a GT40 tube-frame tub) and extending the rear end then putting a Chevy V8 OR BMW V12. It would probably have raised suspension to drive on the street and redesigned body work to be stronger and add headlight bezels. I would figure the price would run anywhere from $8,000 to around $25,000 for the top-of-the-line car. Also do you think people would be interested in this type of car. Any info would be apprciated. If anyone would like to tell me how to post a picture I will show what I am taking about. Thanks for your time. |

aspect than any manta repo I've seen.
Seems like most of those mantas are VW powered "old school" cars.

yes, acad 13. If you look close the hard points for motor
mounts front suspension/rear IRS are there.
The body was just free form a little.
The frame has three layers to it with a good mount of side impact protection. It is drawn just the way I would build it.
Unless I change a tube junction I can ref all tube lengths from these sheets, but the chassis has gone through a couple of revisions since these were made,and then I had to stop for a while.
Just something to keep me out of the bars ;-)P.S.The scans didn't show Paul

 I beg to differ. The Manta Mirage is a badass car. One of my favorite kits. It is not VW powered. They usually have a small block chevy for power.

Just to try to clear things up.Manta Montage= tube frame/ bug pan with V6 or VW power
This car is modeled after the M6GT and was built after one of the Lovette Brothers died in a racing acident. So in my mind it is not a true Manta. Manta Mirage= tube frame/ with Small block Chevy V8
This car was built by both brothers and was the original design. It was intented to be a street legal Can-Am car, and basically they accomplished their goal.

Meat or Dave, you guys seem to be very knowledgable resources in the kitcar industry. With that being said, Would an Accura NSX be a good donor car for a Lambo Kit? Obviously it will be much more expensive then a fiero conversion, but what are your thoughts about the difference of quality in terms of all of the NSX's parts? Could this be an everyday drivable car? I guess i'm just curious to know whether the chassis stretch and a mere Lambo body change would still give me the handeling, performance, and quality of an Acura NSX with a Diable look. What other types of parts upgrades would have to be made if this conversion is even possible? Also, how safe are kits, do they go through mandatory crash testing among established kit manufacturers? I've never heard anyone discuss whether or not there are safety standards although i'de assume there would have to be in order for them to be street legal. Which Lambo Kit company would you guys recommend as making the best quality kits? Strongest frames, closest replications to identical, etc... I know this seems like alot, do either you guys know of any websites that would provide answers to my questions? Thanks in Advance...

Well, I can't answer for Dave's neck of the woods (he's one of them thar feriners from a different country, don't cha know) but here's my answer that generally covers only the U.S. market: An NSX is a unibody design. An aluminum unibody design at that. That, in itself, isn't a bad thing, but - for use as a Diablo - I don't know that it would be an easy switch. The problem would be that the NSX is a pretty well-tuned unit, and I'm not sure how much of the structure of the unibody can be modified, or how many of the external panels are structural members. More than likely, using an NSX as a donor wouldn't be an easy thing to do; it would have to be a rebody that probably just puts parts over some of the rear sections, the doors would be a nightmare, but the front should be pretty simple...those panels look like they unbolt/unweld. Also, as the thing is aluminum, you're going to have to so some pretty fancy aluminum welding if you're going to be bracing the chassis. It's not impossible, but it is different than - say - stretching a Fiero. Spec-wise, the NSX: Wheelbase 99.6 in (2,530 mm)
Overall Length 174.2 in (4,425 mm)
Overall Width 71.3 in (1,810 mm)
Overall Height 46.1 in (1,170 mm)
The Diablo:
Wheelbase 104 in (2,650 mm)
Overall Length 176 in (4,460 mm)
Overall Width 80 in (2,040 mm)
Overall Height 44 in (1,105 mm) Looking at the specs, a stretch would probably be required, length can be added, width can be added, but the car's a good two inches taller. With the aluminum chassis, the differences in length and height, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. Besides, the cost of the Acura NSX would preclude any reasonable resale amount, or the ability to find a whole lot of buyers willing to carve up an already-nice car. If you're planning on spending such a large amount ... I'd recommend picking up a good, used mid-engined car and building a custom chassis around it. You'd probably be better off, and you'd probably have some cash left over as well. As to the matter of safety testing, I'll let Dave handle the wacky overseas stuff. I'll take the reins here in the U.S. and say "crash testing? What crash testing?" Kit cars are generally considered to be one-offs, and are not subject to crash testing, as long as you're not making a limousine or building a car for hire. If you build a non-stretch, donor car based Diablo replica, your car will be marginally as close to as safe as the original car was...although the doors will have been compromised, the glass is different, and you probably had to change some of the cockpit area. If you think of your car as a motorcycle with two extra wheels, and give in to "biker's paranoia" (believe that no one on the road can see you, and that they really are going to turn into your lane while your occupying it), you'll be much better off. Ok first I'll thank you for the confidence, so I'll try my best to answer your questions.
First of all, crash testing costs money (and lots of it). I don't know the US, thats Meat's department, but here and Japan it's about AUD$250 000 for the test. Secondly the law for crash testing is that if a manufacturer want to build/import more that 1000 cars in a year, then crash testing is mandatory, below that, they are counted as special interest cars and don't fall under the same laws.Ok now the Honda/Acura NSX. To use the NSX as a donor is just creating more headaches for yourself. Yes they are fantastic cars, but to put it bluntley, don't mess with them. The only way I can see to turn one into a Lambo replica is to custom build the body and cut it up into individual panels and screw them into the original mounting points, and to me, that sounds too much like hard work. You are much better off useing the Fiero or even a custom tube chassis, it will cost you less money and headaches. Remember NSX are still going for AUD$90 000+. I could build a very very nice Lambo from a fiero for that and still have change. Sorry to rain on your parade. Hope this helps Your mate in OZ Dave

Thanks for all of the info. You're right, the NSX conversion would be a headache of a project. About the safety or crash testing, it's not really a motorcylce fear, moreless, i just want to have the safest kit possible. Roll bars, tube chassis, and whatever else would help strengthen the shell just in case of an front/side/rear impact. It's not my driving i'm worried about, it's the other persons...LOL...i've been in 2 accidents in my life and both were b/c other people were driving crazy. I just want to have some confidence in knowing that if it ever does happen again, i'll still be able to walk away from it. I'm moving to Miami, FL where everyone drives as if they're in bumper cars. This is the kind of expert advice i've been needing to hear. When will you begin building the modified Attack Coupe? ...Thanks again...

Actually I would like to see someone follow through with this idea of turning a race car chassis into a street super car. I mean its not like the average person can afford a Ultima GTR. But I mean most of these race frames sell for anywhere from $1000 to $7000 for a turn-key minus. So from what I have researched about you would end up spending anywhere from 10k to 20k or for the super nice one would probably be 30k. Which isn't bad for a 400hp, 1500lb car that is street legal. With a top speed of more than 180mph. Any other thoughts...

Well suprisingly enough my nieghbors car is a Lola Sports 2000 race car and has a ground clearence of 3.5". Most of these cars were designed to be high off the ground for use of diffusers. Since these cars use slicks which have a profile of 2"'s or so, once you add a street tire this would also add to the clearence enabling you to get another inch or so out. Well just another thought.

Just to refresh my memory. Are most of the GT40 replicas out their a true Monocoque chassis or are they just tube frames with thin sheet metal around it? I hate to put it that way and do not want to stir up trouble on the forum about this. I don't really know any other way to put it.Thanks

Most of the GT40s are space-frame set-ups. Some of the companies are changing over to stainless steel monocoque. Mine is a semi-monocoque setup.Your pal,
