I recently inherited a 72 VW Ghia chassis and would like to finally build a kit car. (after several years of interest/waiting) So I would prefer a 356 Speedster, so I am open to suggestions/advise on how to accomplish this goal and doing it on a fairly tight budget using my own labor and skills. Help. :)

Thanks,
Mike

I do not know of any 356 speedster kits for a ghia. However there are some really good ones for vintage bugs. Since your are on a tight budget I would consider the following:

If your ghia is in good shape or can be put into good shape fairly inexpensively, I would sell it and put the money toward your 356 kit. I don't know what area of the country you are in, but ghia's in my state are getting extremely rare. Mint ones are fetching around $8,000.

Check out vintagespeedsters.com. They are in CA. They have been around for ever and produce a great quality kit. I know their turnkey models start at $17,900 and go up to a max of about $23,000. Their kits start out under $10,000.

If you can get some decent money for you ghia, you might not have to fork out very much for a kit, or may need to only finance about $10,000 for a turnkey car.

I beleive the ghia shares the platform with the beetle. Your ghia should also have IRS which should make it a better option for a kit car. Many kit cars are available. A few are the porsche 356 speedster, and 550 spyder, the valkrie( a GT-40 replica), the puma, and many many others. Look on www.shoptalkforums.com under kitcars for more vw based kits.
