Ok, i know this probly gets asked a million times but...Im just starting to get into this (I finnaly have a workshop!) and I was wonder what the best kit would be for a beginner? Im pretty handy around cars (worked in a few body shops and rebuilt a few motors). I have no clue on what would be the easyest to built (just so i dont get over whelmed with the first car). Any tips are very much apreciated, Thanks! |

Spotty, you may want to reconsider that. Factory Five does not have the best reputation in the business.

There are a ton of cobra replicas out there to choose from. And since you are a beginner, you will want one that fits together perfectly without much hassle. The cobra is a great kit for a beginner to assemble, but you are going to want to get one that is of superior quality, so you don't wind up redrilling holes in the frame to make body panels fit. Believe me, I have learned the hard way.I would look at the following companies for starters. Lonestar, and many other manufacuters produce great kits. I would avoid the following kits at all costs. Factory Five, CMC/Fiberfab/Streat Beasts/Innovative Street Machines - they are all the same shady company with a million different names. Another company I would avoid at the present time is everett morrison. Not because they build bad kit - they build great ones, but they recently have had a fire and will be experiencing major delivery delays. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMED YOU DO THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SPENDING ANY OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY! 1. Log on to kitcar.com, navigate to the cobra country page and check out the manufacurers listed there. I personally would spend the $40 on the complete cobra guide before I forked out thousands on a kit. Curt Scott the publisher has been a respected man in the industry for decades. Also check out his comsumer alert section on the website. He lists all the snakes out there who will take your money. 2. Talk to MEAT who posts regularly on this site. He is a wealth of info. 3. Don't buy any kit from a manufacture who is more than a 500 miles away from your home if possible. If you have an issue come up that should be covered under warranty but you are 3000 miles aways, are you really going to pay to ship the car back that far? Hope this helps. KITCARMAN

In looking to but a used cobra would the suggestion to stay away from Factory Five still hold? Seems like those are the only ones in my budget (<$28k) on the used market. Thanks

In your price range, you've got choices like Shell Valley, Midstates, A&C (a really nice car), TCR, Venom, and - if you wanted NEW rather than USED - you're pretty close to being able to pick up a great Cobra, the Backdraft Racing car (it's a turnkey-minus; you'd need to supply an engine/trans). But ... and this is a pretty huge 'but' ... you can get a brand new construction FFR for ~$22K to $24K from a number of reputable builders. Your pal, Meat.

I feel ashamed since you put it like that. I guess I haven't been paying attention. I like Cobras and all, but I've seen so many they get boring. So I haven't paid too much attention to them. Don't they sell an obnoxious number of kits though? Maybe I just assumed since they sell so many they must be good. Rick Lord http://www.kingdomcustoms.com |

Over the past year I've only seen at most a handfull of used cobra's asking <30k. Most seem to be in the $45-$70k range. Where are you seeing these great buys in my price range (all-in @ <30k)? Thanks.

Spotty I am goig to catch hell for this, but In my OPINION you cant go wrong with FFR for the money. I am not saying there are not better kits for the money, but you will be hard pressed to find the support that you can get with the FFR. Almost 3000 sold should tell you something. Be gentle on me Meat. Check them out and all the others then make a rational decision. Mike www.mikescustomcobraparts.netwww.mikescustomcobraparts.net |

Under the hood: aluminium V8 (3.9L, 280 hp, Rover/Buick), Holley 4 bbl. carburetion, 4-speed (including electric overdrive on 3rd and 4th). It's RHD (right hand drive), just as were many of the cars produced by AC for Britain and the commonwealth. This car was built and owned for several years by Gerry Hawkridge of BRA and current owner of Hawk Cars, so the build quality is flawless. In the cockpit: original dash layout with a full array of Smiths Instruments gauges; authentic AC reproduction steering wheel and hub, proper switches (not plastic repros), Wilton wool carpets with edge bindings, single-hoop rollbar, soft-top roof & side curtains, heater/defroster (just installed); hardtop is negotiable if you prefer to pay less for the car. It still had the original 1983 tires but they were dried out, so I installed new 225/60 BFGs onto new, chromed wire wheels with AC knockoffs. Vintage Raydyot driving lights, new rear springs. The body form came from Atkins JA11 so it is accurate and the car is fast, tight and rattle-free, remember it was built by the chap who builds limited-production cars for a living. The right-hand drive adds to the authenticity and will take you about 5 minutes to get accustomed to... and you will possess a Cobra that attracts constant favorable attention. This very car has been featured in several Cobra hardcover books. You will get history and documentation on the car. Car is in Canada and you'll have no problem taking it into the USA, no additional cost and it's registered as a 1969. It has accumulated only 6,000 miles since it was built in 1983 and is in excellent condition. Regrettably, personal circumstances dictate I must sell. Serious 289 aficionados only please! Many photos available upon your request. Asking $26,000 USD for a quick sale; I will consider an early Mustang fastback as a partial-trade against it. Brian is a journeyman painter by trade, and we spent a lot of time on the body to fix some things most people avoid. He built it to drive every day. He have decided to change careers so that is why we are selling it. Here is a list of the new parts on the car: Slotted roters, brake hoses, radiator and shroud, recovery bottle, hoses, ignition wires, water pump, gaskets, tires, all tune up items (spark plugs, spark plug wires, intake manifold gaskets, etc.), rebuilt transmission with a new clutch, changed grease in the rear end and shocks. That's about all we can think of right now. The paint used is Standox Urethane and the body is very straight. Brian spent alot of time working on the body, especially the doors, inside and out. It is dark blue with white stripes. Brian wanted me to put in the caveat that we haven't really had a chance to clean up the engine yet so the engine can look way better than it does. I am not saying there are not better kits for the money, but you will be hard pressed to find the support that you can get with the FFR. Almost 3000 sold should tell you something. Be gentle on me Meat. Check them out and all the others then make a rational decision. Mike www.mikescustomcobraparts.net
Ooooh... I ... and ... Okay, fine. FFR has sold over 3,000 Cobra replicas. That is true. Just don't believe everything - or even half - of everything you read about the FFR. It's not a space frame, it's not a monocoque, the story of where the original chassis came from is "interesting," they don't treat their suppliers all that well, their early bodies were terrible, they shipped ALUMINUM ROD ENDS THAT FAILED with kits, their weld splatter on their chassis is sometimes terrible, they have back order issues, they don't exactly tell the whole truth, they don't follow up on their promises, and their prices are now on par with other Cobra replica manufacturers who have superior 'glasswork, well designed frames, and a far longer time in the business. Does this mean that FFR is a bad company? Hell no! They can sell you a steamy pile of ... car, not ship all of the parts and you'll end up thanking them for it! I've seen it done! They have a whole website full of lock-stepped, jack-booted internet thugs who stole entire websites full of information and put it up on their site! Absolutely! Buy an FFR! Become one! You will be assimilated! And if you EVER speak out against the FFR product you'll be attacked at every turn. Remember: no matter how poor your fiberglass is on the body when you get it, no matter how many parts are missing from the kit, and no matter how many times you get promised something is 'shipping,' the FFR mantra is "youll forget all about it when you finish your car.' As evidence of how excellent their inventorying prowess is, I actually conducted a science experiment. I made a bet that I could make a complete FFR just from spare or left-over parts that were mis-shipped. Guess what? I could. I did. That's a testament to how well the company tracks stuff. So, yes, the FFR is a good kit. However, there are also a number of other kits that are right around the same price range. Make sure you check them all out. Of course, that's just my opinion. Meat--Interesing adds you posted above. Where did you find those listings? Can you give me the source? If you look on the cobracountry sales site... http://www.cobracountry.com/cobrasforsale.html ...you'll see most sales are well over $30k. Also seems many of the lower priced cars in your ads need additional work or finishing to be ready to drive. I just looked at a half dozen cobra's now for sale in the Wash DC area and most were asking $40k-60k--too rich for my budget, and this is supposed to be a buyers market right now. I'm not a mechanic and need a car in good condition ready to drive for under $30k. Thanks.

The ads are from all over the place; I have a program that crawls Cobra, kit car and automotive websites and pulls ads. I don't know exactly where the specific ads came from, but I would be willing to bet than a bunch of them came from CobraCounty.com, kitcars.com, ClubCobra.com and the various autotrader/recycler.com sites.Your pal, Meat.

Yep, wrote it myself. I figured it was easier to have a program that pulled all the information I was looking for, rather than actually spend all of my time trying to find the info by myself. Unfortunately, it's not user friendly; I wrote it, and I know what it does...and even then sometimes it needs a bit of coercion, and a some head scratching if one of the websites it checks (even Google) changes it's format. Every strange holiday (most recently, Einstein's birthday) Google changes their header. Because the program is looking for a specific 'key,' it couldn't verify Google's page. Neato, eh? Hey Meat,This particular group of posts seems like the perfect discussion to direct to the comparison page on cobratrader.com! How is the page coming?

About the same as all the other pages I'm supposed to be working on. Sigh. If only there were more hours in a day... Actually, I'm waiting until after the Knott's show, because I want to get some more pictures and more info from some of the manufacturers. I just got the Cobra Assembly Manual (Shell Valley) from TCR, and have been going over it in a critiquing sort of way. Plus, with the CobraForum gone, I've been trying to organize some info as well as set up a new forum to fill the void as it were. One day, everything will be done. I swear.
