We have been approached by some buyers to purchase the Comarth Xtamy, but as a "kit car" that is no warranties or guarantees and/or US certification and/or EPA/DOT. This should shave some cash off the sale price around the $33k - $35k range.

What would you guys think of this car as a "kit car" turnkey?

That particular car is probably something more along the lines of an "aquired taste." It's obvious that a bunch of work went into it.

My first question is, are you offering it as a kit, a turnkey, or a turnkey-minus? The next question depends on your answer!

The suggestion is to have 3 companies that one would import the bodies, one would get the chasis and other parts and the other company would assemble it similar to the BMW replica that builds the turnkey Z3 I guess. So, the answer to the question would be we want to offer turnkeys with 20 - 30% down and then we can finance the build from that with our credit lines and then the balance upon completion - other is letter of credit for the full build.

This is a setup to try and avoid the issue of certifying vehicles with DOT/EPA, but normal GM dealers do not like this, due to the liability and warranty issues, even though we can still buy product liability and after market warranties I would guess again.

This also supposedly gets around the issue of the Lemon Laws. I havent researched this, but Panoz, if you know who he is, sells or had sold his cars like that - or so I was told.

Look forward to further discussion on this.

That sounds like way too much work. Chuck Beck imports his 550 Spyder as a turnkey-minus from South America. Superformance imports their turn-key minus Cobra from South Africa, as does Backdraft Racing. CAV imports their GT40 as a turnkey-minus car from S.A. as well.

You don't need three companies. Have the company build the car complete - sans engine and transmission - and import that. Then set up a builder network of storefronts across the country (okay, you'd probably only need two or three) to sell the cars.

Also, I wouldn't be too terribly concerned about lemon laws. This is because as soon as someone finds out that you're trying to avoid them, they'll not buy your car. I wouldn't buy a car from someone who was purposely attempting to avoid compliance with a law that is in place to protect me as a consumer. There's a reason the laws are there.

What you should do instead is offer a great warranty on every part of the car that comes in the turnkey-minus, and make sure that your builders offer a fantastic warranty on every part of the car that they work one. You should support your customers above and beyond what they expect; they're investing in your product. You need them way more than they need you.
