Need some advice and or recommendations from people who have powered their 356 speedster or other kits with the air-cooled VW engines and transaxles.First there seems to be two basic choices for the transaxle that most people use 3:88 or 4:12 I realize that the 4:12 will giver quicker starts and the 3:88 better gas mileage but is that all I should base my decision. Is there a recommendation for a specific combination of gear ratios for the 4 individual gears? I have read on some sites that these cases need to be beefed up and that cretin keys and gears need to be replaced with ones made from hardened steel. Should I consider a 5 speed Porsche transaxle is the extra gear worth the price, will it fit into a bug or will I need to make major mods to squeeze it in. Can anyone point me to a good source for specks HP etc on the stock 1600cc and 1700cc engines? I have been told that these engines are still in production at the VW plant in Mexico has anyone been able to purchase one direct. Thanks for any info 356FAN 356FAN

Hi 356FAN,We are Speedster and Spyder replicas manufacturers http://speed356.tripod.com/ We use the 3:88 for big displacement engines, for example using the 1915 c.c. turbo charged a speedster accelerates 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 sec. the 3:88 permit drive a higger speeds with less rpm. but if you use a standard 1600 c.c. you must use the 4.1 final ratio. The 1600c.c. develops 60 h.p. we get the brand new engins directly from VW mexico. speed356

Thanks for the reply Speed356,Dose the ratio of each individual gear make a big difference or are they a standard and that’s what makes up the 3:88 or the 4:12. Is it possible to get a 5 speed that will fit into the VW bug chassis? Thanks 356FAN 356FAN

Dear 356FAN,with the 3:88 you feel a significant difference in each gear because you obtain longer gears. In some Spyders we used the golf and jetta 5 speed tranny with 1800 c.c., 2000 c.c. or 1.8 turbo water cooled engines, in two we used the 2.5 chrysler turbo (160 h.p.)with automatic 4 speeds tranny. And 1 customer used a VW rabbit engine and tranny in his speedster kit. But if you are using a modified Bug engine the 3:88 is enough. Regards speed356

hey 356FANgene berg makes a 5th gear kit for VW transmissions that are good. 4th in a Type I transmission is already an overdrive gear, what the 5th gear will do for you is bring the ratios closer in the 3rd to 4th and then your existing 4th is used for 5th.
