I e-mailed the following to fiberglast.com but they didn't give me a satisfactory answer. If anyone knows, please reply.

I need to know if 4 layers of 6 or 10oz cloth would be stronger than 4
layers of 24 oz mat. I know cloth is stronger, but I don't know if it
is only stronger at the same thickness and I know mat is much thicker.
Thanks
Scott

IF YOURE USING IT TO CONSTRUCT A BODY FOR A KIT CAR IR A MOLD DON'T EVEN THINK OF CLOTH,USING CLOTH IN A BODY WILL ALMOST ALWAYS PRINT THROUGH THE PATTERN THROUGH THE GELCOAT TO THE FINISH SURFACE, EVEN IF IT WAS APPLIED OVER LAYERS OF MAT THAT WERE AGAINST THE GELCOAT FIRST.YOU PUT YOUR NICE NEW PAINTED TOY OUT IN THE SUN FOR A WHILE AND YOU'LL START TO SEE THE WEAVE PATTERN IN THE PAINT AFTER A WHILE.OUNCE FOR OUNCE CLOTH IS STRONGER THAN MAT AS FAR AS SHEAR STRENGTH,OR FRACTURE STRENGTH,BUT IN EQUEL WEIGHTS CLOTH WILL LACK THE BULK TO RESIST FLEXING OR BUCKLING,ARE YOU SURE YOU DIDEN'T MEAN
2 OUNCE MAT?24 OUNCE WEIGHT IS USUALLY REFERING TO WOVEN ROVINGS AND BI OR TRI DIRECTIONAL WEAVES USED IN BOATS OR LARGE TRUCK BODIES WHICH USUALLY HAVE A FEW LAYERS OF MAT BETWEEN THE GELCOAT AND WEAVES

I was referring to the weight of mat per square yard. I forgot it is quoted by square foot.
Let me ask another question then, would 4 layers of 1 1/2oz mat be of adequate strength for the major portion of a replica if not using any sandwich materials?
Thanks,
Scott

IF YOU INSISTED ON USING CLOTH IN A BODY IT WOULD HAVE TO BE USED AS THE LAST LAYERS OF YOUR LAYUP,BUT YOU'D STILL BE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH PRINT THROUGH AFTER THE CAR WAS FINISHED AND OUT IN THE SUN FOR A WHILE.FOUR LAYERS OF OUNCE AND A HALF MAT ROLLED OUT PROPERLY WOULD GIVE YOU A FINISHED THICKNESS OF ABOUT THREE SIXTEENTHS
THICKNESS WHICH SHOULD BE PLENTY FOR ANY PROPERLY SUPPORTED BODY KIT USE AN EXTRA LAYER OROUND THE POINTS WHERE YOU KNOW YOU'LL BE ATTACHING THE BODY,REMEMBER THE BODY IS FOR COSMETICS, THE REAL CAR IS
WHAT YOU BUILD UNDERNEATH!!

I FORGOT TO MENTION,IF YOU HAVE ANY LARGE FLAT AREAS,YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADD A LAYER OF ONE SIXTEENTH COREMAT BETWEEN THE THIRD AND LAST
LAYER, KEEP IT AWAY FROM THE OUTSIDE EDGES, AND ANYWHERE YOU MIGHT BE BONDING IN ANY REINFORCEMENTS
