My father and I looked into building a kit car 25 years ago. We never got around to it. The car we really liked at the time was a Gazelle. My own kids like that style also. Not married to a Gazelle, but want something of that vintage. Don't want a street rod. I have 6 kids so something larger would be nice. What companies still sell the kits to build your own? Any pitfalls I should be aware of before I get started? How long does it take to build a kit? Can it be used for everyday driving (4-5 days per week, about 10 - 30 miles per day)? I have the experience, or know those who do, to do my own engine work, etc. I'm thinking this would be a nice Christmas present as my oldest boys are starting to get really into cars. Thanks for all your help. |

Lots of good questions. Basically, in a nutshell, do your research. There are still a few companies out there that sell 'antique' kits, but not many: http://www.kitcarlist.com/ There are a million Gazelles and similar style cars out there waiting to be restored. Being VW based, it would be an easy project to share with the family, and easy on the budget. Can it be driven every day? Maybe... if you can live with the quirks of a VW drivetrain, don't thrash it and don't mind getting wet occasionally when it rains. I don't know of one kit manufacturer that has a convertible that doesn't leak at least a little!
