I get the general gist of kit cars but I have a lot of questions (about pre-built kit cars). Do they run like regular cars and are they legal to drive? Is the insurance and registration same as any other car? Is there anything else different about these cars than regular cars such as speed limitations or how long you can drive them? How is the gas consumption?

There must be some catch if you're buying such expensive cars for cheap.. besides the fact that they run on donor engines..

Sorry if these seem like dumb questions but I really just recently even figured out that these exist =x

Good questions for a newbie. In general, a kit car is just like any other car. Road legalities vary from state to state, same as insurance. It all depends on how they are registered - such as a 'special construction' or in the case of some VW's, they might be still registered as a VW. The catch for some replicas of Lamborghini's or Cobra's or whatever is the overall build quality. You have to make certain you know exactly what you are getting into - research the make you want to make informed decisions. There are lots of clubs out there that are just for kits. Do a generic web search for one in your area. Chances are, there is someone with some sort of kit near you that would be glad to show it and take you through a step by step.
