I have a '86 Chevette GAZELLE and need to know if anything was produced to 'beef it up' for more power?

What transmission? What engine? GM 4-banger? No sense in increasing the power if the transmission can't handle it.

It's a 1986 Chevette, GM, 1600cc engine with a spark-o-matic 5 speed. It was assembled in 1988 and the odometer shows only 4K miles which the original owner/assembler swears by.

With gas heading to $4/gal, I'll buy it! Seriously, there's nothing you can really do to "beef it up". These cars were made for economy, not power. I've seen some conversions where a 350 small block and automatic were dropped in...but I suspect there would be horrible oversteer in something like that.

The frame could probably be modified enough to accept a small V6, like a 3800 series, and if you've got the room you might be able to put the entire front clip under the car and convert it to FWD. All kinds of possibilities - your just limited to your wallet. But forget about powering up the existing drivetrain - it just ain't gonna happen.

Thanks Rick. I have an associate who is going to research the possibility of converting to a early model BMW 325i engine and trany. Like you said...."I'm only limited to my wallet" so this project may take a while. Once again...Tanx
