I have a Fiberfab MG TD kit car and I was wondering what front shocks would be the best for it. Stock shocks or something different? I know the car is lighter as an MG than it was as a bug does this make a difference? It's built on a 1974 VW beetle chasis.

I use to play around quite a bit with the front shocks on VW based cars and just kept coming back to the original stock Boge shocks on the lighter weight cars. If your car was indeed a little heavier I would use something like an HG low pressure gas shock (I don't know if those are still available)or even move up to a KYB (stiffer but good handling. Your're kind of limited to how much you can change the ride characteristics (unless you go with an adjustable front beam) because you can't adjust your spring rates.

Skip the gas shocks. Get the hydraulics, cheapest ones you can find. They will give you the best ride.

I have a couple of these cars and I have found that the best shock is a J.C.Whitney cheapo,or a half worn out original.New quality shocks beat the fiberglass to death. In the assembly manuel it tells you how to cut, turn, and reweld the beam for the correct ride height. There is a better way,and that is to remove some of the torsion leaves in the front end.Gives the right height, and a much better ride.It is like driving a different car.I just found out the old Porsche boys have been doing this for years. If you go to tdreplica.com you will find detailed instructions on how to do it.It is not hard.
