I just purchased a 1952 MG kit car. It was registered in VT as a '74 VW beetle (the chasis it's built on). It's insured as a '52 MG. In NY where I wish to register the car, DMV tells me I'll have to file for a new VIN and have it inspected at a special shop. What does that mean? It won't pass inspection based on the current standards if it has a new VIN number does it need to meet current saftey standards? I did call the DMV but they were not very helpful they are mailing me some sort of kit will the paper work I will need.. Am I just getting myself into a headache here? Will I have to jump thru hoops to get this registered in NY?
If someone knows the details I'd like to hear from you. Thanks.

Does it currently have a VIN on the car? Just a suggestion. Google is a wonderful tool . I found the info you were looking for on the NY DMV website in about a minute.
IF the car Currently has a VIN (assuming it does ) because it was regestered as a VW. It just needs to be inspected at a local DMV. A new VIN is not needed

The VIN I have is for a VW and yes, I could register it as such, but DMV told me that that is illegal to do so as it is no longer a VW. Of course I could ignore that, as I'm sure a lot of people do, and register it but what would happen if, God forbid, I had an accident? My insurance says '52 MGTD but my registration would say '74 VW. I bet I'd get sued up the wazoo! I was told by a mechanic that if they assign a new VIN and register it as a 2006 Specialty Vehicle that it may come under 2006 Safety and emissions standards. Is this true? This car would never pass inspection.

there should be no reason it is being insured as a MG. ITs not a MG. A VIN check would show it as a VW. Insure it as a 74 VW since it is titled as such. the state will not ask to see the vehicle if it is a VW
Also it is still a VW. It has the VW drivetrain, Frame, and VIN. Everything around it is changed www.kitcar.ws
