Hi All....I'm doing a full re-wire job on my Sterling and have it almost completed except for a couple of questions. (#2 is on another post)
*My wipers have four wires coming out of them.
*My wiring diagram shows five wires.
*Physical testing shows one wire for ground, one wire for high speed and another wire for low speed.
*The fourth wire does nothing.
*Why don't I have a fifth wire and what's the fourth wire for?
Any ideas? Thanks, Mac.
Photo's of both of my Sterlings are on my web site

That's because you have a motor that isn't from a Beetle. These wiper motors are generally from Greyhound Bus(es)or any other municipal type vehicle with a pantograph style wiper. The wiring diagram that you have is probably for a 1500/1600 Beetle; the 1300 Beetle wiper motor has four wires as well - two of which are grounds for some reason.
Just go with what you found. My hunch is the fourth wire is probably a separate ground, maybe so it parks in the right spot.
