i am installing power mirrors on a '84 datsun 720. sort of a rare SUV. my dad bought the mirrors for me from a wrecker and thinks they may have come from a mazda but isnt sure. my main problem is wiring them up, i know where every wire goes except one, and was hoping someone from this forum with some technical expertise could shed some light.
as you can see from this image, the mirror on the left doesnt have a plug, the wires are lose. the plug that it should fit in to has 5 wires going in to it, where as the mirror only has 4 wires. so i dont know where that 5th wire has to go.if you dont understand anything i have said please say so, ill try to be more clear. *************** Edit: i dont know where the battery connects either :( |

Judging from the drawing, the 'mirror 2' harness is the power harness to both mirrors and the switches. Your + from the battery should be at the red/purple junction; the mirrors probably used to ground right to the body. The '2' mirror is wired the same way as the '1' mirror in terms of grey/blk/brn/grn wires coinciding with the plug wires on the harness. I think there was another intermediate plug between the '2' harness plug and the mirror, but you could safely cut that plug off and use crimp connectors to hook everything up. Bench test all your connections first before installing the mirrors.Rick

i had already thought of the mirrors grounding on to the body, it doesnt, i have looked it all over and it doesnt do that. and i already thought of that 5 wire harness going to something else before it reaches mirror 2, but theres no way to know :(also, how do i get the glass out?

The five wire has to have an intermediate plug before it goes to the mirror - that probably where it grounded to the frame, too. The glass isn't removable unless it breaks - then you glue a new piece in.Rick

Generally mirrors are glued to the backing plate. Just use a pair of pliers, a set of safety goggles, gloves, and go to work. If you can get an edge going, then you can usually slip a putty knife under the mirror and work the adhesive loose. Just be careful of flying glass.Rick
