I am just getting into the investigation process of purchasing a complete, ready to go 427 Shelby Cobra replicar. I have noticed that there are maybe 30 or 40 companies that build these (not counting all the individuals who have done so) including a group authorized/owned by Carroll Shelby (American Shelby I think). I have spent some time at a local Superformance dealer where I live in southern California.

When I look at the prices of these cars they range anywhere from the high twenty thousand range to well over $80,000 for an aluminum body car built by Carroll Shelby's organization. What distinguishes the pricing on these cars (beyond the obvious items like engine, miles and options)? Which companies are recognized as builders of quality cars that adhere to the original design and have good resale (and can anyone speak to the reputation of Superformance, who I was impressed with)? Where can I get more information that will help me to make this purchase decision?

I think that $80k is pretty steep for a car that looks and runs materially the same as those for $50k although I wonder what the deal is for these cars in the $20k range. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
