I love all autos from all years. But I'm tired of the same old "new" supercars. How about you? I've got a design that I've been trying to decide what I'm going to do with. I dont know if I should just build it for myself, or should I share the project with my fellow KitCar Mag. readers. I'm hoping for your feedback, both positive and negative. I would just like to hear your opinions. Thankyou. Sincerly, R.Reed

Of course there would be interest if it was a great design. But with you just asking if we would be iterested without any other info I would say when you have something to share then share it

Thankyou for your honesty kitcarguy, and your absolutly right. I guess it was a dumb question, and to tell you the truth I want so bad to share it with everyone but I first have to decide what I want to do with my idea. I've only been able to show my close friends, my design. Because of its uniqueness, I cannot show the world, in fear of someone taking my ideas, to use as their own. And unfortunatly, I can't afford to get it patented, or whatever I must do to protect it. Next time I'll think before I ask. I thank you for your reply. I hope to hear from you again.
Sincerely, R. Reed

Well Then. If you are in the USA simply get some drawings together and such and 10 bucks and send it off to the US copyright office. At least that way if someone does take it, there are documents showing who penned the idea

Once again thankyou kitcarguy for your input. I wasn't aware that it was as simple as that. The only thing I was ever told was that I'd better be ready to drop $10,000.-- on a patent if I want to claim it as my own. I thought copywrights were for literature and such. I guess it's because I think of it as an automobile instead of what it really is... a drawing. Thanks for the eye-opener, man. So, would that mean that if I got it copywrighted, it would be safe to show the world, without fear of someone taking it from me? Or would I still have to spent alot of $ on a patent to secure my design? R.Reed

Another cost effective way to protect your designs is to send the ORIGINAL documents, drawings, etc. to yourself via registered mail, signature required. Do not open. Put the package away in a safe deposit box.

What this does is establish a legal, and traceable timline for your design should anyone see it and duplicate it. In a court of law you could present an Un opened registered ducument that is date and time stamped as proof of your claim.

Make copies of your work before you do this if you need copies to work with.

Not a good idea. Also this is what the US copyright office has to say about poor mans copyright.

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-general.html#poorman

I’ve heard about a “poor man’s copyright.” What is it?
The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration.

For the small copyright fee it is well worth taking the few minutes and filling a form out to protect your works. Now if you wanted to spend the additional money and you had emblems and all of the other stuff that goes with a car company you might want to file for a trademark as well.It is pretty expensive and a lawyer may be needed to do all the filing.

Hope this helps you out a little.

Don't show the design to anybody before you sign a contract and obtain some money Or else... you can see your car made by other person.

Well you'd actually have to show the design in order for someone to deem it worth investing in. Perhaps draw up a confidentialty agreement before showing the design. Otherwise I cant forsee anyone willing to drop cash into your project with out first looking at it.

At the end of the day you should seriously consider talking to a lawyer who specializes in patent, copywrite, and trademark laws.

Hello,

Take this down.
If you fill strong about your design, then you need to apply for a Design Patent.
A Design Patent is straight forward with reasonable cost.
I hold a Utility Patent, which is a bit more involved.

Best of Luck, keep me posted.

All the Best
Stan
