Hey everyone. I have been toying with the idea of building a motorcycle engine powered car for sometime now and wondering if anyone has done it. Im looking to do something with 4 wheels, but I have noticed info on the subject is a little on the light side.
I have seen a few cars such as the sportech and the riot (www.sylva.co.uk) but not much else. Im looking to find the best options to drive the rear wheels. The riot uses a sprocket and parts from the Ford Fiesta Mk2 XR2 front uprights, drive shafts and diff. Take a look at the pic and tell me what you think. Easy to replicate?

The problem doesn't stem from the actual setup - you could runa chain & sprocket, or even a shaft drive and right hand gear from a Honda - the problem comes into lack of torque to get the car moving initially. When you go from a 600 or 800 pound bike with one wheel to provide power to a vehicle with two powered wheels and weighing more than 1000 pounds usually, the motor just can't provide the torque required to motivate the machine. Three wheelers are a common variation, like the T-Rex among others, for a motorcycle based vehicle. Check out www.3wheelers.com for other manufacturers past and present.

well the sportech has no problems at all with getting up to speed 1200lbs with a 4 second 0-60 time. http://www.funcar.com/sportech/index.html . I dont want a 3 wheeler. Been there done that. Had a old Freeway and have the plans for the trimagnum.
I mainly wanted input on how others would set up a 4 wheel car with a motorcycle engine. I guess I could use the sprocket with almost any differential setup. I will just have to put my brain to work .

Hi kitcarguy, I do not have pictures ..but it is pretty straight foreward..I built a large " go kart" using a 600 ninja engine and transmission. This was built using a fabricated axle ) solid or independant customer choise). most parts being found at tractor supply and or Comet karts ( dont have web site handy sorry.) Mine was built with a solid axle to start ( read simple) going straight very very fast was easy..stopping was impossible with out some form of swing arm..the "kart" will bounce opon braking. I would be willing to help if you want. My e-mail is Philpresley@aol.com

How about checking into legends or dwarf stock car racers. They're powered with a 4 cylinder MC engine driving a toyota stick shift into an old toyota rear axle. It'll do 80 mph easy. Dave

80s just not fast enough ...lol . I have ideas . I think I might put something together in the coming months. I was really just looking for input from people who have dont something like this in the past.

You might try looking up the "Formula Hayabusa car" or take a look at it here... http://venus.13x.com/roadracingworld/issues/jun02/formulahayabusa.htm

I'm thinking about doing a 3 wheel T-rex type bike and the part I'm wondering about is reverse. T-rex has specialy designed gear boxes and the Formula Hayabusa has a second starter that spins backwards to act as reverse. Would it be possible to set up a switch to change the polarity of the starter so it could spin backwards to back you up and then forwards to start the engine?

Well one option is using a goldwing motor with reverse. Another would be to rig up a starter with some sort of wheel on the shaft that when engaged would turn the rear wheel. I seen that done on a Tri Magnum in the past
