I am looking for a kit-car that uses modern and reliable technology for a confortable fuel efficient ride. Something maybe using a Japanese engine. Does anyone make this?

That's the idea of a kit car. You build in whatever features you want. Most manufacturers currently don't include engines or interiors (unless you spend the money for a turnkey minus), so you can outfit whatever you want into the vehicle. It's up to you how reliable you want it to be.
