Is "rebody" the term I am looking for? For making one car look like another one on the outside?

How hard is this to do with a modern car? Do bodys just unbolt and come off, or would they have to be cut off and the new one welded?

The goal being a car with modern emissions and safety features (airbags and all,) but a classic look. So I could enjoy driving it daily without worrying about ruining an actual classic car. :)

While googling around I've found "rebody" to be a "dirty word" among classic car restorers, something to do with illegally transferring VIN's. That is definitely NOT what I am talking about. I mean something like this:

Just not that one.

It really depends on the kit you select and what level your build skills happen to be. I've been building kits for myself for just over 30 years now and some are just much more difficult than others. I just did a Superstepside truck conversion using a 1990 Caprice converted into a unique pick-up truck about a year ago. (www.superstepside.com) I would say this is one of the simpler kits to do but even at that I now have over 1000 hours of build time in it. You can count on the fact that you take whatever the typical build time quote by the kit manufacturer is and at least double that amount of time to get the car on the road. Then figure in additional hours for detailing and working out the bugs. A few things to keep in mind is that the sandable gel coat body delivered to you is going to require trimming, body work, and a good paint job before you can even mount it. Then the details of wiring in all the new lights, turn signals, etc., plus possibly reconfiguring the exhaust not to mention lowering the car to adjust for the new lower weight because of the body panel replacement. When I was growing up one of the kit car magazines did a survey and found that roughly 70% of all kit cars sold were never built. I don't know if that figure has changed over the years but I do know that you better do some soul searching about your build skills and really check out the kit you might be purchasing. Just some thoughts...

I am urging everyone on this site to not purchase anything from MADMIKE. I gave him $5,600 in April of 2004 and he has not even remotely finished a my car. He originally promised the ziata would be completed in one month. Dealing with Mike has been the most frustrating situation i have ever encountered. He was a very nice guy until he received my money. Then the lies and non returned phone calls began. I cant even count up all the times he has told me the car will be ready in 2 weeks (with no intention to even work on it), or all the trips i have made to Massachusetts to see the car's shape get progressively worse. VERY HORRIBLE BUISINESS MAN. I am aware of a few other people in my same situation. One of his "customers" had his own car delivered from Kansas for the 49 thunderbird conversion. Mike destroyed a beautiful low mileage thunderbird with backyard style bodywork and craftsmanship. This gentleman ended up leaving his unfinished car in mass. after seeing its shape. I currently have a case with the postal inspector (for mikes prosecution) involving po box fraud, and am involved in a civil case beginning very soon. This thief needs to be in jail. I can provide pictures of the poor quality finished kit for the ziata ($3000) and the salvage junk box with a faulty odometer reading($2,600). Not a beautiful car with 54,000 original miles and a top quality z3 kit like i was told. I purchased JUNK! I Can also provide money order stubs and receipt for the hosts of this website if needed. Please remove Mike from this website because people are still getting ripped off.

thank you for your time,
john
