Hello All,

I just purchased a Sterling ( CCC #416) and would like to move the shifter & parking brake back towards me, where I dont have to reach so far for it. I have seen it done, but I dont know how its done. Any ideas from anyone? I am guessing there is a shift linkage rod that needs to be shortened, but funny thing about VW's is the tunnel is sealed on the underside of the car too!!! I suppose Ill have to drop the engine and tranny in order to get to it... but REALLY dont want to if I dont have to.

Thanks.

Quikniq,
Welcome to the Sterling family! Check out our webpage (under construction) at http://sterling.completeweb.net and join our association!
To answer your question, you can relocate the shift linkage without removing the motor. You'll have to remove the access cover (the oval shaped plate at the base of the firewall on the Sterling, on top of the tunnel) to access the shift linkage connection. Disconnect the link there, then unbolt the shifter, and carefully disconnect the linkage there. The entire rod should then be able to be pushed (or pulled) out the rear of the tunnel. In regular Beetle layouts, the rod is pushed out thru the front of the tunnel, but on a Sterling, it will hit the front spare tire well. After removing the shifter, you'll have to decide where you want it, cut the tunnel and re-install everything. The shift rod will have to be welded, or you could purchase an already shortened rod from any of the VW suppliers that have dune buggy parts.
A cheaper alternative is to locate a longer, bent shifter handle that will place the shifter closer to you. I have an original from Hurst, but replicas are available.
