HELLO EVERYONE, IM AM RATHER NEW TO THE ARENA OF BUILD KIT AUTO.I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON MY FIRST DIABLO.SO FAR SO GOOD. MY QUESTION IS HOW OR WHERE WOULD I FIND LITERATURE ON HOW TO BUILD AND DESIGN A BODY.WITH A CAD PROGRAM. AM EAGER TO LEARN EVERYTHING I CAN ABOUT BUILDING AND DESIGNING EXOTIC AUTOMOBILES"I HATE TO CALL THEM KIT CARS" I WAS TOLD TO GET THE BOOK THE BOOK GLASS FIBER AUTO BODY CONSTRUCTION SIMPLIFIED. THERE IS ALOT OF USEFUL INFO IN THIS BOOK WHICH IS WHERE I WILL START.IM FASINATED WITH EXOTIC CAR DESIGN. FOR EXAMPLE ON MY DIABLO I SEE MANY AREAS THAT IN MY OPINION COULD BE IMPLOVED,BUT I DONT KNOW WHERE TO START.I WAS GOING TO ENROLL IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN SCHOOL, BUT ID RATHER TAKE THE 70,000 I WOULD PAY IN TUITION AND MAKE CARS.IM ALSO ENROLLED IN THE AUTOBODY COURSES AT THE LOCAL CC,BUT EVEN THE CONCEPT OF BUILDING AND EXOTIC CAR IS A LITTLE ADVANCED FOR WHAT THEY OFFER.IF ANYONE HAS SO HELPFUL INFO I WOULD GLADLY APPRECIATE IT. |

Johnnyboy, Welcome well first things first you are not going to like this but here it is. You need to really build a kit before you try to design and build from scratch I do custom carbon fiber parts and it takes lots of practice to get it right. If you really want to build and design cars go to school (I WAS GOING TO ENROLL IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN SCHOOL, BUT ID RATHER TAKE THE 70,000 I WOULD PAY IN TUITION AND MAKE CARS) for one you will make enough money to afford to build your own design and more importantly you will learn what to do and not to do with out wasting your money. I took autobody repair at the Votech years ago and believe it or not it does help the little tricks saves time and aggravation. If I was you I would go to ebay find a cheap kit (like a bradley) that needs to be finished and finish it and perhaps experiment with some mods of your own design it wiil give you some experience and wont cost you alot. Doing stuff in CAD is difficult by itself it takes lots of practice to learn the ins and outs of the program. The good news building a car body is not that expensive material wise but it is VERY difficult to get it to look good the expensive part of cars is the chassis and drive train if your building something like a diablo then theres more cost becuase of badges and what not to make it look authentic. Please dont take this post as a you cant do it post because you can do it almost anyone with any mechanical skills and an eye for detail can do it but it wont be simple and it can get expensive very quickly. Good luck and I look forward to reading posts on the forum about your progress.Sorry everyone for such a long post. THANK YOU FOR YOUR IMPUT, I AM DEFINATLY TAKING THIS PROJECT SLOWLY.IM TOTALLY INGULFED IN WORKING ON MY FIRST DIABLO.MY FAVORITE PART IS THE BUILD I AM ENROLLED IN CLASSES FOR AT LEAST 4 YEARS,STARTING WITH AUTOBODY.I ALSO INTERN WITH A LOCAL BUILDER IN FLA.I HAVE DECIDED TO USE A BOXSTER AS MY DONOR,RATHER THAN ATTEMPT TO FABRICATE A TUBE FRAME SET UP.I ANTICPATE THIS PROJECT TAKING AT LEAST A YEAR.I JUST DIDNT WANT TO WASTE TIME IN SCHOOL ON A DEGREE THAT TAKES A LEFT TURN IN THE SECOND YEAR.THEY MAKE YOU DESIGN FUNITURE BEFORE CARS.I DONT HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR THAT.I FIND THAT I LEARN MORE JUST HANGING OUT AT THE SHOP RATHER THAN GOING TO CLASSES.I AM TAKE THE TECH CLASSESES THOUGH. I WAS JUST CURIOUS TO KNOW WHATS NEXT.I PLANE TO MAKE MY DECKLID AND MIRRORS FROM CARBONFIBER ANY SUGGESTION(BESIDES LEARN HOW TO SPELL.

Johnnyboy, I get what your saying furniture design is not cool however look at the shape of furniture around your house and everywhere you go and you will see that the shapes and curves are the same as cars. Where in Florida are you? When building things out of carbonfiber it is the same as doing it in fiberglass except for 2 things first you cant screw up the weave of the fabric because everyone can see it and 2 DO NOT use cheap resin opt for the expensive epoxies that have a UV inhibator in them. Good luck and if you are below the age of 30 go to school and get a degree it will help you alot even if its boring designing furniture when class is over go to the shop and think about cars hahaha. If you want custom carbon fiber or fiberglass parts made email me at custom_composite@yahoo.com
