I'm putting together a new Bradley GT, and decided to go with a Corvair engine instead of the old volkswagen motor that came with my pan and tranny. I need some advice as to the direction to go with how to take the power from the motor to the drive wheels. Should I modify my pan to accept a corvair transmission, find an adapter to reverse the direction of the corvair engine, or i've even heard that reversing the cam will reverse the direction of rotation(engine is getting rebuilt anyway). Any other good ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

What I'm struggling with most is what part I want to try to modify. If I go with a Corvair engine/VW trans I'm going to have some mounting and drive direction issues, If I go with corvair engine/trans I'm going to have some more major issues with mounting it to my VW pan. I'm also considering scrapping the pan and building a frame from scratch, which will allow me alot for freedom in what kind of motor/trans combo I can go for.

NO PROBLEM: Just flip the ring gear on the V.W. trans. I've had 2 kit cars with Corvair engines. Any V.W. shop can do this for you.

Can the ring gear be flipped on an IRS transmission? I thought only swingaxle. I believe the preferable method is to install a reverse cam in the motor. You may also have clearance issues as I think the corvair will stick out the back of the Bradley. Seems like lots of work for very little gain.

My stock corvair engine puts out 110HP compaired to the stock vw engine i have that puts out 45HP. A 65HP gain would require a complete rebuild kit for my engine, plus a few performance parts, along with having my heads ported and polished. My corvair engine is in good shape and will probably only require very few replacement parts to make a reliable 110HP that won't be strained to the max all the time. As for the clearance issues, I haven't measure the engine cavity, but total length of the corvair engine is under 36 inches, and i'm sure that the engine compartment can handle it.

Hey guys, sorry to just jump in like this, but I might have a link that can help you out. As I have a Corvair that I am wanting more power in, I have been searching for possible engine swaps. As you know, the rotation of the Corvair screws up a lot of ideas. BUT, I did come across a link with some info on putting a Corvair engine in a VW. They referred to the kit as a "Transvair kit", all though they did not say where to purchase it. But the idea is to use the Corvair engine, trans and diff in the VW. Check it out at: http://www.type2.com/library/enginem/corvair.htm

The transvair kit was strictly for VW vans - it will not fit a Beetle chassis. The best solution is to build the Vair motor to run 'backwards'. Flipping the ring gear can be done in either type of tranny, but it pre-loads the wrong side of the gear, and can lead to early failure if you really flog the car. A tranny strap will help the load on the frame...of course, a custom chassis is always a good option.

Switching the rotation of the corvair engine is preferred. You will need a reverse rotation cam, as well as a reverse rotation distributor gear to make the Corvair engine rotate backwards. This is preferred over a simple flip of the VW ring gear, as the torque through the pinion will be on the wrong side (coast side) and will likely wear under power/abuse. You can research/purchace VW/Corvair kits from Clarks Corvair Parts: http://www.corvair.com www.corvair.com/user-cgi/catalog.cgi?function=goto&catalog=SPECIALTY§ion=OTTO&page=OTTO-36" target="_blank">http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/catalog.cgi?function=goto&catalog=SPECIALTY§ion=OTTO&page=OTTO-36 Hope this helps & good luck... Always loved the Bradley GT. Jay
