Fit in a beetle or fit to a beetle transmission? Look at www.shoptalkforums.com under conversion perversion. Scott

Speed 356: Do you mean they are the same size engine and trans as the Beetle and are water cooled? Sounds like the SCAT engines.
the waterboxer is similar in physical size to an upright type 1 engine, but it is slightly larger in all dimensions. it is actually closer in size to the later bus (72-83) type 4 aircooled engine. the engine/tranny boltup is the same, so a waterboxer engine can be bolted to any 12 volt VW tranny. the waterboxer was used from 84-85 in 1.9l form and from 86-92 as a 2.1l. hope that helps.

Thanks Scott: Any idea of how much larger the engine is compared to the Beetle 1600? Do you think it would fit in a Speedster 356 kit? I live in Michigan and need the better heating.

the waterboxer engines are 1.9l (83-84) and 2.1l (85-91). the 2.1 is a better engine.
i think it might fit in a speedster engine-wise, but the pumbing would be a nightmare. the plumbing is a nightmare already in a Vanagon, adapting it to another vehicle would be a disaster in my opinion.
have you considered a gas heater? there are several options from VW's and also brand new ones which are even better. we have put a few eperspacher BN2 heaters into speedsters. they work really well. the new epsar heaters are amazing, if you can take the price.
