True kit car insurance is cheap in the UK,

20yr old Male, in Milton Keynes
In a self build Covin 911 Convertible
with a 1.6L turbo (from the Ford Escort)

Premium £238.72 with £250ex
(This was four years ago!!! And I have more then enough accidents there to make it interesting. The same year I got quoted £2211.19 for an 1995 MR2 which I wrote off.)

There are only a handful of insurance companies that will quote on kit cars. And from them only very few will quote if you are under 25yrs. If the engine is bigger then a 3.5 or if it’s a V8 it get hard to get them to talk with you. I know my dodge viper replica has a 390~FE V8 out of a 1968 Cougar (I think).

For you other question…I’m not a hundred per cent sure if a modified car with a standard chassis is classed as a kit car. As I understood it there has to be chassis modification for it to be classed as a kit car. Your car can have ever have a Q plate allocated (q refers to query) and this is because you have replace more then a certain percentage of the car and the age is in question.
Finally, if your car was to be classed as a kit car you would have to passes the HATED SVA test and you might find that some of you modifications wouldn’t pass and you would have to modify them or replace them. If you want more help on this contact the DVLA in Swansea and get them to send you some information on the SVA test. It should tell which cars need one (imports and kit cars at the moment) and what is required to pass one.

Hope this helps
