I'm inclined to say thats mostly a myth, with the exception of the Iron Duke carbuerated 4-cylinder, which was notorious for having problems. And depending on what you plan to build that engine may get replaced in a heartbeat, or you can get a better donor like the 88 GT.

The Fiero had a problem catching on fire due to bad oil leaks and oil getting on the exhaust manifold and cat. This happened mostly in the 4 cyl. engine. Pontiac came out with a campaign (recall) for all Fieros in which the oil leaks were repaired and a heat shield was put in place between the exhaust manifold and engine block which kept oil from getting on the manifold and cat. This campaign was for both 4 cyl. and v6 engines. If you are going to build a kit on this Fiero and you are using the original engine, I suggest you take the car to your local Pontiac Dealer and have them run the vin to see if the campaign has been performed. You could just call them and give your info over the phone.
