You really will need to get and learn a 3d design program I dont think there are any programs just for car design. I will tell you this there is a huge learning curve for 3d progs they are difficult to learn.Go to Top of Page

The best way is to use 3D Studio Max6 - this program is very simple and you can make low/mid-quality model for about 1 day or EXCELLENT hi-poly model for 2-3-4 weeks in depending of the details of the body. Other good choice is Rhinoceros 3 -this is great program but my opinion is that the 3DS Max6 is better for all shapes. Rhino is NURBS program that use separate parts, you can trim/cut them then join it with other surfaces, but the final model can't be modified. If you wont to make changes, you can make the model at the begining. 3D Studio Maax6 is the best way for you because the model has control points that you can move after the finishing of the model and this cause changes of the surface only on the place with this/these modified points - this is great!!!
This method is MESH MODELLING and is good for replikating of the real cars.
Also,if you don't have money for 3DS Max6,download for free its twin- GMAX (GameMax). Go to www.discreet.com and download this program-it's 95% like 3D Studio, but without rendering and import options- you can creeate model and if you wont to make shot of your work, you must export this model into other 3d program. Also,to make possible import options, download additional plug-ins from this page:
www.gmaxsupport.com
When you download GMAX (19MB) find in internet 3ds max tutorials-the menus and design techniques are SAME
The program has: measure instruments, convert between "metric" and "US standard" units, etc. - all that you need.

I use NURBS modelling in Rhino.... mesh editing is nice but just never has the same flow. Try both trials out and see what you like. Mesh is easy to pick up, and if you like, just make a mesh model and copy the points for a nurbs model.

I would recomend anim8or for an intoroduction into 3d modeling. Anim8or has a really great support forum and is a pretty simple program to learn. It's free too. You can find it at www.anim8or.com

You can use "3D Studio Max6" or "Rhinoceros 3" fot designing the chassis. It's most important what you have in the brain not what is the program (for engineers of not). Try to place the separate tubes to right place by your mind. Then look for mistakes and try to represent the crash by different sides to ashure that all tubes are correctly attached one by one. Make the chassis safe not light/unsure,because the light/unshure chassis is way for quick acceleration but also is quick way for the hospital after collision!

It's true that its inportant wwhats in de brain but that is ok because Im a automotive student but I have ownly learend to juse a 2D program named Autocad. But I want to make a 3D model so I can give it to a enginering company how can simulatie braking, accelerating, craching etc.

And can anybody send me a tube-frame model of a cobra kitcar so I can get some ideas for my own car.
