I hear people talking about space frames vs. the fiero tub, im sorry but what is the difference and most replica are made from fiberglass and if i am not mistaken fiberglass is not really strong and soemone can punch through it. Or is the Fiberglass placed on top of an old frame? Any help aprecciated. |

Hello MateSpace frame is normally a box section steel tube, fabricated and welded together to form a chassis with which engine, suspension etc etc are attached to. The Fiero is a complete car, with which u remove door skins, bonnet etc etc and then bolt your fibreglass panels to. Yes fibreglass isnt very strong on its own, but when its layered up with resin it becomes rock hard, and yes you could punch through it if you are Arnold Schwarzenegger. hope this helps you out. Muzzy hass it all right, but maybe I can add something:Search through the forum for other "newbie" posts, or other threads with "space frame" or something in the subject. There have been other people that wanted to know the difference between a space frame and a fiero tub. As for the fiberglass, well laid fiberglass is very strong. I have seen two people stand on top of a bumper (standing on its front, like an upside down "u") and it didn't break. It didn't even have any steel bracing. You can also use Kevlar when you are laying it up if you really need the strength (doors for example). Out of all the composites, it has the highest toughness and impact resistance. In technical jargon, it's tensile strength is about 43,000PSI! Downside is the cost and weight. In general, think of the fiberglass bodies as a skin that keeps the dirt out. The frames (fiero or space frame, etc) are there for the support. http://www.statikdesign.com/scratchbuilt/
