Can regular car doors be converted to gullwing types? I like to put these style of doors on my z24. I don't have a clue on how to do it, or where to get the latches. Any help appreciated! |

Do you mean Gullwing (think old school Mercedes) or something more like a Diablo?Gullwing doors have an extra part which extends to the roof of the car. Each door takes up about 1/3-1/2 of the width of the roof. The pivot point is also located there - doors open make it look like a seagull. Hence the term Gull-wing. I wouldn't see a way to do this with a standard door - not that it's impossible. Now if you wanted doors like many sportscars have (someone help me on the name here), you can go to lambolounge.com and check out the door mounts there. These doors "rotate" open to a vertical position (looking from the side). I've seen doors hung for everything from SLKs to Integras. You will need a pair of serious hinges and shocks. The shocks will have to be chosen by the weight of the door/the location they are placed, and by how far they will need to "push" up. As far as hinges go, someone said even the strongest ones at Home depot don't work. You should find good explanations out there, but if not, let me know and I'll try to give some help. Good luck, F

Terminology: - Gull-wing door...hinges are on the roof, part of the roof is the door, they swing straight up, like the back door on a minivan. The conversion may be possible, but you would have to strengthen the roof area to support the door when open. you would also have to re-position the latch to the bottom of the door opening. This would be cool with a corvette to make it look like the "Gull-Vette" concept car from the '60s. Here is one gull-wing door car: http://www.geocities.com/aztec7fan/ - Scizzor (sp?) doors...These swing up like what you see on many lambos. One side of the door has the latch, and the other side has the hinge(s). I've seen this conversion done on several standard-door cars. Usually the mechanism needs to push the door out slightly and then open the door. Complicated, but it is possible.
