Sure, but not that you would notice. Metal flake is suspended in the clear coat, and covers almost all the base coat. The base coat color is to hide the areas that the flake doesn't hit. You could try it, but I don't think you would see much. Try the shade shifting metal flake.

No. That would defeat the purpose of the flake. The flake is there to get the look of the old school dune buggies and bass boats. Mix color with flake, and you'll wind up with really thick color, since the color would coat the flake. If you are trying to achieve a metallic look, like a blue or red metallic, then there are paints already mixed with the metallic (mica) pigment in it. What are you trying to achieve with this paint job?

That's fine, but what are you trying to achieve? You can fade any color, whether it be a metallic or not. Do you want the glittery look of metalflake, like an old-school dunebuggy, or do you just want a metallic look, like some of today's industry paint jobs? If you are going for the glitter, it can be done: you will have to purchase two colors of glitter. Do your base in whatever red you want that's close to one of the metalflakes, then follow up with the metalflake color (1) in clear, start heavy and solid where you want it to start and stop where you want the fade to start. Then do the opposite direction with color(2) and meet the fade in the middle. The two metalflakes will overlap to a degree, and you can always fine tune the amount of 'fade' by spraying one color flake or the other until you reach a point you like. Fades aren't the easiest thing in the world to get even, but when doen right they look pretty neat. I did something similar with flip-flop ghost flames on the hood of my truck. Can't see 'em until you're on top of it!
