First of all, yes I'm a girl, I have never painted on a car, so yes I'm ignorant. Please ignore that. I want to do a custom paint job on my car. I want to do small designs on the hood and sides. Can I paint over the top of my base coat? What kind of paint do I use? How do I seal it? |

Angel, It depends on what your car has currently. If it's a base coat/clear coat system like most new cars have, then you would probably be safe painting over it. The paint, of course, would have to be in decent shape, and you would have to start by sanding the entire car, removing emblems/moldings/whatever, and degreasing everything before you start. There is all kinds of paints available; it all depends on your budget and how ambitious you want to get. A single stage acrylic enamel would be right for beginners, because it doesn't need a top clear coat. If you are airbrushing designs and whatnot on the body, then you would have to step up to a basecoat/clearcoat system, which takes a bit more financially and a bit more nerve. You would also need at least two sprayguns - one dedicated solely to the clear coat. For someone just starting out and never shot a car before, I would really suggest becoming friendly with someone that has a body shop. I've painted everything from boats to jetskis in my studio (I'm a signmaker by trade), but I took my truck to a friends shop when I painted it. It took four days for each level of paint, and a clean room to shoot it in (which is key, unless you like dust specks). Read all you can about bodywork and painting, and go watch people shoot cars in a body shop. Sometimes they'll let you watch the process if you bring 'em coffee and donuts! You could always let me know where you are, and if you are local, I'd be glad to walk you through it as much as I can. Good Luck!
