Does anyone know of a company making 1930s-era luxury-level kits? I'm specifically thinking of some of the prettier Packard and Duesenberg designs: cars that simply ooze class and aesthetic refinement. If you know of such a company, feel free to let me know at wireflight@yahoo.comThanks! |

Thanks! Alas, the Excalibur had to my eye more of a mid-range appearance. I was initially excited to learn that Packard is making cars again (www.packardmotorcar.com), but the new car looks like something from the 1950s rather than from the 1930s (although the performance claims are stunning).  It's funny: modern ads talk about the style and passion of the carmakers and their offerings, but nothing on the market -- and none of the "concept cars" -- shows me any real appreciation for the love of doing things the right way. I know that isn't a politically correct way of stating my point, but I just don't know a better way of stating it. The Maybach is nice, as are the new (BMW) Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Bentley Continental -- but those cars seem to have been styled by rank novices. Even the Cadillac Sixteen, although generally better-proportioned than the other autos, sacrifices design correctness in favor of jellybean aerodynamics exacerbated by a squashed roofline. At speeds that are legal in the USA, aerodynamics matters little; nevertheless, automakers have obsessed over that pittance and in so doing have utterly forgotten how to make even a pretty car. However, even that is not enough for me. I don't want just a pretty car: I want a beautiful automobile. (and perhaps I am sufficiently old that I am uninjured by my unfulfilled desires)
