In depending what exactly you wish to make with this 3D model, the programs are different.
1.If you want to make CNC-mashined wheels, tha best programs for this are : I-DEAS(support only for Intel-based PC's with Windows NT OS): Rhino(ceros)-another very useful program ; Solid works ;Mastercam 9 (Mcam 9) ;etc. Most CNC mashines supports only NURBS-based programs.
2.If you wish to make only design conception of the wheels, uoy can use every 3D programs, that you have. The best and easiest 3D program is 3D Studio MAX. Supported: NURBS/NURMS/PATCH/MESH/SPLINE/BOOLEAN/SOLIDS and UNLIMITED BOOLEAS with NURMS smoothing(optional with NPower software's plug-in),import/export for more programs,etc..

I guess I should then ask, what is the process from start to finish of making a wheel? Is it first sketched, then transferred to a 3D program, then into the CNC mahine, and finally you have a wheel? Is this right or am I missing anything? Also, are all wheels created with a CNC machine? In other words, is this the absolute best way of making a wheel and is this what brands (i.e. Giovanna, Brabus, AMG, etc) use? Thanks in advance.

Yes,the design and production process are the same(scetches,3d,CNC).
CNC-mashining is the best, fast and easiest way to get the CORRECT SHAPE. Also, you can make wheels with hand lathe(mashine tool),but in this case mistakes are too possible. Big companies use only CNC-mashining. Most wheels are made from high pressure cast aluminium. This is the BULGARIAN invention.

What are wheels called in their uncut form? In other words, I'm trying to find information on google for whole, uncut wheels that could be turned into a thing of beauty but am coming up short. Any key terms or suggestions of companies selling them would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
