Hello all, I have found a great source for .3ds and .max files of *******, Aston Martin, Lambo and lots more. See www.gamasutraexchange.com, search cars. Most of them are very high polygon, 150,000 for the one I'm looking at. I think thats the key for a good model...yes?

Now that I have this .max file, I do not have 3ds max. But, I do have R14 autocad. I looked for a file converter .max to .dwg on the net, didnt find one. The search continues. 3ds Max is expensive and I dont think I would use it enough to warrent buying it. Even if I had it, I wouldn't use it enough to be good at it.

The question is: Is there anyone on the list that could take the file and spit out full size patterns for my formers, or is there a service like this? Maybe a link to a file converter? Any advice???

Have you tried NuGraf, Deep Exploration or DeBabelizer? Or are you looking for something very specific? I am pretty sure that those programs import, export and translate different fire formats.

Your pal,
Meat.

I have 3D Studio MAX6 and I can convert more files,including AutoCAD 12,13,14,2000 and 2004.
If you send me this file,I will send you this one in DWG,DXF or other file-format.

Thanks for the info meat, I just found NuGraf, hadn't had time to look at it closely yet. I do have good news though. I just called a local sigh shop that deals in vector art and they said that they could convert it, print it to paper or (this is the cool part) feed it into there 4'x8' CNC router table and cut out the 1/4" formers at the rate of 2 feet a minute!!!!!!! He said he can cut up to 6" plywood!!! Holy crap! I'm going to meet with him on Tuesday and get this thing converted and come up with a cost for the CNC work. For those of you in the same boat, you might go talk to your local sign guy. This guy seemed cool and knew what I wanted more than I did.
I'll keep everyone posted of the progress.

Thanks for the offer Bobi1, if this don't work...you might be hearing from me.

I'm not really following you........ I got the file from Gamasutra, not 3d02. I looked at the site and most of the rides I would like to build look pretty well proportioned. What do you mean smooth, but incorrect?

I did some reading on the NuGraf site and found the you must have at least 3ds WITH the NuGraf to read or convert .max files...........that sucks. The cheapest I have found MAX6 is $500.......that sucks too.

I'm gonna look at the other you mentioned though.
Thanks again

OK here is my take on 3d files. Many vehicles can be completely conceptualized and tested in 3d long before anything goes into fabrication. It is my opininion that game files are not worthy of producing life size cars. The cad files can be used to cnc the plug but if the porportions are slightly off in a game version (many are) then translate that to life size will mean a major problem correcting.

If it is your goal to build your own car using cad files I can assure you the files dont come cheap (especially highly detailed ones. Where the doors meet up properly and bodylines line up perfectly. For example. The true factory 3d files of the Lamborghini Gallardo will run you a minimum 6-7 thousand US dollars.

Think of it this way. 1:18 scale diecast models can be bought as cheap as $15. or less. not a whole lot of detail but it looks like the car you like.... Turn around and buy a scale 1:18 for 100.00 and see the tiny details in wiring and carpet!! its the quality that counts, not there mere fact you have a $15 model.

I have looked at game file cars before and I agree that they would not be very good candidates for use. They have lots of square edges and would require a lot of work to smooth out. The file I have is for the Jaguar F-type concept, 150,000 polygons. I'm guessing thats good? I found the demo for 3ds max and had a look at the car, it looks very "round" looking at the wire model. I dont think I will have any problems with it......yet.

OK, now that I have all the software, now what??? How do you assign the right diamentions?
