No, not mitsubishi or dodge, saw this car about 15 years ago

The "Conquest" was a long wheelbase kit body manufactured by "LaDawri Coachcraft" in Long Beach, CA during the 50s and 60s. The company first started in the Vancouver area of British Columbia by a man named Les A. Dawes. He built and showed his first prototype car in the Vancouver area during the mid 50s...even claimed to have tested the body design in the wind tunnel at the Univ of BC. In 1957, Les moved to Long Beach where he started manufacture. The "Conquest" was featured on the cover of "Road and Track" magazine in 1957. By puchasing molds for other fiberglas kit cars, LaDawri expanded their body/style offerings and in the 60s printed some pretty nice color catalogs. By 1968, time had become very difficult and LaDawri suffered a major fire and closed its doors. To date, it is still unknown where Les A. Dawes relocated to...some said back to Canada, some to Mexico...does anyone know what became of Les A. Dawes?

I have a LaDawri Conquest body that has been highly customized sometime in the early '60's. It has the name "Sonic Coach" hand painted in a "frenched" style licence plate area at the rear of the car. It also has a "T" style spoiler "wing" and large wheelwell flairs at the rear. car was painted "60's style w/white mother of pearl w/candy red,yellow,blue,green and violot overlays w/small blue planets on each side of "wing" supports.
Anyinfo or photos of this car would be greatly appreciated.
The story I got w/the car was that it was built in the ealy '60's for the show car circuit along with the likes of Barris and Jefferies style cars. Car was never drivable at the time it was built.
Never had an interior due to evidence of snaps still present for a tonue cover.
Plus, all modifications to car were mostly formed from thin brown "Press board" Or "pegboard" and a "Bondo" type filler.

When I was about 17 years old in the late 1950’s I installed a Conquest body on a custom tube frame racecar that my uncle designed and built. We lived in Ohio and the shell of a body arrived from California in a create. Much fiberglass work was needed to put bulkheads in the body and mount it to the frame. The engine was a bored out to 400ci Packard that originally came in a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. I think he only raced the car a couple of times at Watkins Glen and Marlboro. I have some old pictures but they haven’t been scanned.I visited this web site because I’m considering bringing the car out to California (where I now live) and restoring it as a vintage racecar. I was very glad to see the historical information about LaDawri and Les A Dawes history info from jgulow. Anyone know of any other racecars built with the Conquest? Gene |

There are a few Conquest race cars out there. I would encourage you to join the La Dawri discussion group and register your car. I would also love to post pictures of your car to the web site.
