This may bridge the line between "kit car" and "hot rod" but...

Has anyone seen a reproduction/replica of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air Convertible? I've looked around, used google, flipped through some magazines, but have found nothing. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, the '57 isn't really all that expensive. Which means that there's very few companies that do anything with the cars at all; there's not much call for a replica, so there's not much profit to be had in creating a kit for the cars. And since there's no kit, it makes things a bit more difficult.

There was a body kit out, but I can't find any information on them, so they probably disappeared since I saw them. You might try Street Rodder magazine.

But there is hope. I know that U.S. Body Source offers a complete fiberglass body (55-57), although it's a coupe, not a convertible. You can probably start there: www.usbody.com

If I find anything else, I'll post it here. Hope that helps!

Your pal,
Meat.

I found a frame at
http://www.progressiveautomotive.com/55CJ.htm

I found body parts at
http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/5557chev.html
http://www.up22.com/chevy55N.htm#55-183
http://www.carsinc.com/chevy/1953_1957_chevy

plus the US Body site you mentioned. Looks like it could be done. I'm thinking the way to go is to get a 2 door hard top and make it a convertible.

Thanks for the input!

The frame of a '57 Chevy Convertible is stronger than the frame on any '57 Hardtop, Coupe, or Sedan specifically to account for the abscense of a roof. If you simply cut the roof off of a 2 door coupe or hardtop without adding additional bracing to the frame, you will end up with "junk".

In reply to meat,if you have tried to purchase a steel 57 convertible they are expensive-the price on all the tri-5s are pretty high-I'm not sure what you would consider expensive.
There used to be a company in Fla that made many types of fiberglass repro's-I can't remember the name and cannot find it on the internet.

I remember Ciadella Ent. used to sell a kit to convert a 57 4door into a convertible. The kit had everything including the needed frame braces and replacement side panels, top frame, and pinch weld moulding sheet metal. Dont know if they still do that or if they still even exist. Someone probably has one somewhere they never used.

Oh forgot to mention, I looked into Protype R&D years ago. They do make 55 and 57 chevy fiberglass kit cars as well as the 35 Auburn, 52 MG, 34 Mercedes, and a couple others as well as several airplane kits. They also do a lot of custom work and the photos on their website prototyperesearch.com are fun to look at. They appear to do excellent work. Bottom line in my opinion is, if you can afford their finished kit, you can afford a steel one. However, I dont know if the same holds true for an unfinished or partial kit, - no clue.

Nice post. I discover some thing much harder on different blogs everyday. Most commonly it is stimulating to learn content from other writers and use a little there. I’d choose to apply certain with the content on my own weblog regardless of whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll provide link on the web weblog. Thanks for sharing.
