I looked at an older TBird kit car which is partially completed. Looks like about 100 hours and $1000 to get it on the road, but many of the 1955 parts are already purchased, maybe all. Needs a windshield and a top.The guy mentioned it was built by "Classic", about 1992. He said company went out of business. 1 - Does anyone have leads on this car? 2 - Wow, if someone had an assembly manual, that would be awesome! |

The only companies I have in my database that made Thunderbird replicas are:
- Amaretta Coach made '57 T-bird replicas (kit and turn-key called the "T-Era") in the '80s.
- American Classics made a T-bird replica called the "Big Thunder" back in the early 90s. They made the mistake of starting in Fargo, North Dakota (a place still stained by Fiberfab/CMC). No recent information on the company.
- Classic Auto Reproductions made a '57 T-bird replica (kit and turn-key) in the '80s.
- Daytona Automotive Fiberglass also had a '55 Thunderbird replica back in the late '80s - early 90s - kit of unknown origin; they purchased it from someone else.
- Dofral made a replica of the '57 T-bird (kit and turnkey), and this kit should be identifiable as being shorter length-wise than a normal T-bird. Don't know what became of them, but their replica was called the "Classic T"
- Hawkeye Classics had a replica of the '57 T-bird. Unknown lineage, unknown address, unknown customers. Apparently they rode the wave of T-Bird replicas that swept through the U.S. in the late '70s/early '80s and then disappeared with nary a ripple.
- Mead built a T-Bird replica in the early '90s. They also had a few neo-classics and a Mercedes SSR.
- Prestige Classics made a '57 T-bird that was VW-based (eew!), as well as a whole bunch of other kits (XK-120, Gazelle clone, MG-TD). Whereabouts unknown.
- Regal Roadsters is probably going to be your best bet for getting your car done. They have been working on T-birds and making T-bird replicas since the '80s...and they're still around! Their website is: http://regaltbird.com/
- Shay (sold to Shell Valley), made Model A replicas and a '55 T-bird (turnkey) in the '70s.
- Sweet made a VW-based T-bird that was set on a lengthened VW chassis. I never saw one of these cars, only heard about them. Never even seen a picture.
- VeeBirds made a VW-based '57 T-bird back in the late '70s/early '80s.
I don't know whether that helps you or not, but it's what I've got.Your pal, Meat.
