I'm sorta new to the kit car thing but I was wondering if can you stretch a VW superbug or a VW type 3 chassis to make a car like an F360?VW chassis wheelbase is 2400 mm while an F360 is 2600mm which i think is a pretty big gap between the two. I want to use a VW chassis primarly because it is cheap and the engine is in the mid/rear of the car. Also from looking at http://nova-international.net/data/chassis.htm it looks fairly easy to work with. Unfortunately I can't use a Fiero as i live in Australia!!! Any ideas?? Is this a silly idea or can it be done??? Also I wanna know if you can do this, could you get it registered in Australia. Do the laws allow you to stretch a chassis and reshell the car?? Dave114, iwannaviper, Meat could you help me here??? Any assitance would be great |

Hello, we also are looking information about stretch a vw chassis, to make a diablo. Some local guy who work with the VW told me how to doit... To stretch it you have to put some kind of adaptor in the front, between the front axle and the main chassis... you dont have to weld if you dont want, beacause is fixed by bolts and screws. sorry about my english, is not the best. tellme if you need more informationwww.sherklein.com.ar

The best way to strech a VW chassis is to weld an extension into the tunnel section just behind the pedal mount, and just in front of the shifter. It would also involve lengthening floor pans, gas lines, accelerator cable and clutch linkage. Extending just the front beam seems like it would be difficult to make structuraly sound, but anything is possible. A type 3 chassis may make things a little more difficult because the engine is mounted to an engine support bracket that is supported by the body, not the chassis like in type 1 chassis. Being from the U.S, I have no idea whether any of this is legal in Australia.

Yeah any info about that adaptor would be great!!But do you know how structurally sound it would be by just getting an adaptor that is attached by bolts and screws??? Welding isn't much of a problem but I imagine it would be heaps easier to bolt on an extension. You also said that the guy told you can weld an extension is this the same way as MB said just in front of the shifter and just behind the pedal mount?? Thanks for your assistance
