I have a friend State side looking to import a kit car from the UK. Does anyone know how it can be done as at the moment we seem to be hearing so many different stories and we want to do this correctly. Any information would be gratefully apprieciated |

Well I have had a look into it a few months back, because my girlfriend was to bring a Citroen C3 Puriel (or however it is said!!) back there with her, she is from Colorado.I found a few things that might help you out. The basing run down as I understood it was that: 1. If the car is more then 25years old (or possible an old a pre SVA car registered using it donors reg would work) can me imported as a classic car with out any trouble. 2. If the car is younger then 25yrs, then it gets hard. The car MUST have a CAT, it must pass US (specific to the state) emissions, and it must have a type approval (this is the hard bit…on a side note the Morgan only got this a few years back if I recall correctly). You can contact an importer who will do ALL this for you for a large sum of money. 3. I could not find ANY information on importing part…this might be good because you could remove the engine, gearbox etc. And claim that it is not a complete car but rather that it is parts. Complete the PARTS in the US of A and avoid the import hassle. But look into this before doing anything or you could face having to ship the car out of the country after one year or worse see it destroyed at a scrap yard. Good luck -Steffen |

I don't know it that is entirely correct. Companies such as Noble, DARE & Ultima (and a long time ago TVR did as well) all provide kit to the US market and they are not made in the USA. So there are surly ways around it, but it might not be easy. -Steffen

My advice is to check with customs, Most likely you will have to remove the engine and transmission prior to shipping... basicly a turnkey minus. then ship the engine and tranny if you still want it or have new ones put in once shipped.www.powerhousesports.net |
