Does anyone know whether or not the LS1 can be mated directly to the 6 speed T56 corvette transaxle for a mid engine application?...without any MAJOR complications |

the t56 has to be from an ls1/ls6 applacation it cant be from a lt1 or a L98 in the case of the 89-90 vettes that came 6 speed

the t56 will only fit if it came from an ls1, the t56 that came from the lt1, l98 "89-90 corvettes", and the vipers have a shorter spline and will not fit on the ls1/ls6, also make sure thats it a t56 and not a zf 6 speed , i am not sure how but i know they did come in some of the vettes in the mid 90's

The T56 is a front engine/RWD transmission, not a mid/rear engine transaxle, and will not work in a mid-engine application. Remember that a transaxle mounts axles to it, a transmission is only going to have an output shaft to the rear differential. The usual solution is to get an adapter plate for either a ZF trans out of a Pantera (about $6000-$8000, last I saw) or use a modified 915/930/G50 transmission modified for mid-engine application w/a GM adaptor. Check out Renegade Hybrids at www.renegadehybrids.com" target="_blank">http://www.renegadehybrids.com. You could also consult V8-archie, but he only works with Fiero's and his mounting is transverse, I presume you're looking for longitudal.

The d00d is talking about something like this : http://home.earthlink.net/~westphillip/This guy is putting an LS1 mated directly to a 1998 C5 corvette transaxle mounted mid engine in a 1965 Corvair . In this application he useing the automatic transaxle . A few ads I have seen seem to show the auto is not to expensive so I am looking at useing it in my next project (in a year or so) when I'm done playing with my current project :) Hmmmm , 2200 pounds , mid engine , 450 pounds of torque , steering wheel mounted shifter paddles , ...... |

Just a few pieces of info first: The T56 in the vette is not really a transaxle. The differential is physically a separate housing from the transmission - i.e. they can be separated and have their own fluid. The Vette T-56 is a standard transmission that was designed for traditional front engine, RWD applications. Chevrolet came up with special bits to mount it in this fashion. That being said, Chevrolet also used the T-56 and LS1 in F-bodies. In that application (Camaros & Firebirds) the T-56 is mated directly to the engine and a standard driveshaft connects it to the differential. I know that F-bodies and Corvettes can use the same clutch, so I assume the flywheel is the same in either application. So, I would imagine if you got the bellhousing, and throw-out arm/bearing from a 98 or later V8 F-body, it should bolt-up directly to the Corvette T-56 and give you what you're looking for. `02 Corvette `63 Volkswagen `95 Ford Ranger |

The Audi Getrag 3V is a fairly inexpensive unit as well; a number of guys are mating this to the Ford engine (there's a Chevy adapter as well) in their GT40 replicas. It's not recommended for engines putting out over 400HP, though!Your pal, Meat.
