What Is A Kit Car Anyway?
In strict form, the term "kit car" is used to describe a package that includes everything needed to build a complete vehicle, no matter if all the parts are new, rebuilt, or remanufactured.
A general use of the term would include vehicle packages that are less than complete, such as one that is shipped without an engine or various drivetrain componants.
Many of the vehicle packages on the market today require the use of parts from donor cars. A donor car is a vehicle from which componants are removed to use on the new kit car. Today's most popular donor cars are Ford 5.0 Mustangs and Pontiac V6 Fieros. Most of the kits that use Mustangs have their own racing type tube chassis and use the Mustang's drivetrain. Most of the kits using Fieros require the body to be seperated from the chassis, on which the kit's body will be mounted, and usually a higher powered V8 will replace the V6.
Mustangs and Fieros are only two of many donor cars being used, you can use KitCars.com's Donor Search to find kits for a multitude of donor cars, you'll be suprised at the number of donors used and even more suprised by the number of kits available.
Most of the kits you will find are built very similar to hi-performance race cars using chromemoly round tube chassis, high power engines, four wheel independent suspensions, etc...
When looking for a new kit car to assemble, don't just look at what's included, find out what's not included.

What Is A Turnkey?
A turnkey is a new vehicle ready to drive home. Some manufacturers offer turnkey versions of their kits for people who don't want to build the kit themself. Some manufacturers offer only turnkey vehicles that are not available as kits.
Turnkeys are usually not built using all new parts, they usually use donors just as the kits do, but not always.
There are also shops that provide assembly services, filling the gap between manufacturers who do not build turnkeys and people who do not want to build a kit.

I've written this before, but it never hurts to repeat yourself. Starting from scratch, best way to learn about kit cars would be to locate nearest active kit car club to your location and contact to request guest participation in their meetings/events.
Need help locating nearest kit car club - post your city and state, so that I, or another member of this forum, can supply additional info.
Happy Holiday,
Mike

Meat,
How often do you update your club directory? Out of curiosity, clicked on the link you provided and happened to note that contact information for the Arizona Kit Car Club (of which I am a member)is outdated by more than a year. Your link for club website at Hemmings is still current, but club has yet to update site with current contact info. resulting from election of new officers in the Spring of this year.
Hopefully, the club will soon update their Hemmings website where you will then be able to obtain current contact info. for your directory.
Should you desire,I can communicate with new officer(s) to determine what current contact info. has been authorized for publication.
Mike
